Know What You’re Eating

It is well established that fat, sugar and salt all greatly contribute to many diseases including cardiovascular and cancer. Advertisers often attempt to camouflage these dangerous ingredients by using alternative terms that might not be readily recognized.

SUGAR: Sugar may be referred to as corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, fructose, dextrose, honey, concentrated fruit juices, glucose, maltose, lactose, sucrose and sugar alcohols such as sorbitol, mannitol and xylitol.

SODIUM: Salt may be found in many different forms but still has the same health hazards. Salt could be labeled as monosodium glutamate (MSG), baking soda (sodium carbonate), sodium nitrate, sodium saccharin, sodium benzoate, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce and seasoned salt.

FAT: Several terms such as hydrogenated or partially de-hydrogenated fats are commonly used to make fats appear to be less harmful or even healthy. Other descriptions used to camouflage fat include animal fats, margarine, butter, cocoa butter, palm coconut, palm kernel oils, cream, egg yolks, solids, vegetable shortening hydrogenated or partially de-hydrogenated oil and lard.

We can help. In our clinic we encourage our patients to “keep score on their health” with regular examinations including blood test to determine cholesterol, sugar, sodium and fat levels, etc. Several studies show that if individuals take responsibility for their health by reading labels on the foods they eat, using proper nutritional supplementation, following a regular exercise program, proper rest and regular checkups, 80% of all disease could be prevented, and existing disease can often be reversed.
